Photographic courses in the UK

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I stay?

There are lots of good places to stay in the village and the surrounding areas. On booking we provide you with a recommended list of accommodation, ranging from simple B&B’s through to luxury hotels. That way you can choose your accommodation based on your own requirements and budget!

Am I best to drive or use public transport?

It is easy to get to the Aspire Photography Training studio by public transport, however we do suggest that you stay in the village if you do not have a car with you, unless you are happy to get a taxi to and from your accommodation. If you are coming in your own transport then this allows you more options for accommodation and eating out.

Where is the nearest train station?

There is a train station in Staveley, only a few minutes' walk from the studio. To get to Staveley station you have to first get to Oxenholme mainline station which is about 15 minutes away, and change there. They run roughly every hour so check this when you are booking your ticket to Oxenholme.

What’s a reliable local taxi firm?

We generally use Blue Star if you are coming from the Oxenholme or Kendal directions (01539 723670) or Lakes Taxis if you are coming from the Windermere direction (01539 446777).

How far is the studio from the train station?

The Aspire Photography Training Studio is about 5 minutes' walk from Staveley station.

What are the start and finish times?

The seminars generally start at 9.30am, but we ask that people try and arrive for 9.15am so that you can relax, get a drink and meet the team before things get started. Seminars are usually rounded up around 4.30pm – 5pm.

Do we get lunch, refreshments, etc?

All your refreshments are included during the day, along with a good lunch. We need to know of any special dietary requirements prior to the seminar.

How far in advance do I need to book?

Try and book on the seminar as far in advance as you can to avoid disappointment, there are limited places and some seminars book up very quickly.

Please contact the studio directly to discuss the Bespoke programme. If you are interested in booking we will issue the terms and conditions for you prior to your joining.

What equipment do I need to bring?

You need to bring your camera on a photographic course, along with a zoom lens. Some courses have specific equipment requirements and these will be outlined in your course confirmation e mail. You need to bring clothing for all weathers on a photographic course.

Can I pay in Instalments?

If you are struggling to pay the full balance in advance then we may accept part payment in order to reserve your place. You need to discuss this with your training advisor upon booking.

What is the dress code?

There is no specific dress code but if there is a photographic shoot then it is likely you will be outdoors, we go out no matter what the weather so you should be prepared come rain or shine! Footwear is important, you may be taken on a muddy location so high heels or open toes are not a great idea! The studio is glass walled so does get affected by the outdoor temperature, please consider this when choosing your outfit.

Would love to bring my family, but unsure what they would do for three days?

There is lots to do around the area. Just a short drive away are Kendal, Windermere or Ambleside with more variety and many visitor attractions. Contact the Tourist Information Centres for details. If you need your children to be looked after during the day then try Bobbins Day Nursery (01539 822400) based in the village, booking in advance is essential.

Will I gain any qualifications?

You will be given a certificate on completion of the seminar, however no official qualification is issued. Our training is much more practical without any of the paperwork and box ticking required by an awarding body, this allows us to be much more flexible, specific and creative with our seminars.

Where can I park my car?

There is a car park in the Mill Yard where the studio is based, this is shared with other businesses so allow time to find parking.

If I arrive early where could I go for breakfast?

Try More Bakery in the Mill Yard, they serve great breakfast rolls in award winning bread, open from 8am.

What is there to do in the evenings?

In the village there is the Eagle & Child pub or the Hawkshead Brewery where you can meet up with some of the others on your course. If you want to venture out of the village try The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal, they have a variety of entertainment, including theatre, live music and cinema.

Do we get handouts on the courses for what we have learned?

Some seminars provide handouts as a quick recap on the elements covered. However please do not rely completely upon these handouts, it is always advisable that you take ample notes throughout the day so that you do not forget what you have learned. There are no handouts for photographic shoots.
